The short version
- Kiroku doesn't collect personal data. It has no account, no analytics, and no ads, and it doesn't upload your recordings.
- Everything Kiroku makes is saved on your Mac, in folders you can open in Finder.
- We only see what you choose to send us, such as a support email.
What Kiroku collects
Nothing. Kiroku doesn't send information about you, your Mac, or how you use the app to us or to anyone else. It contains no third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking code, and it doesn't track you across other apps or websites.
Kiroku doesn't connect to the internet on its own. Links in the app, like the one to this policy, open in your web browser.
Kiroku is made by Shojum (“we”, “us”).
Screen recording
Kiroku uses the Screen & System Audio Recording permission for three things:
- recording the Screen, Window, or Region you choose, from the moment you start a recording until you stop it,
- recording the sound your Mac plays, when System Audio is on,
- and showing the list of screens and windows you can pick from, and a live preview of the one you picked, before you record.
A recording is saved as a video file inside its project on your Mac, in ~/Movies/Kiroku. The live preview is only shown on screen. It isn't saved.
Kiroku uses screen recordings for one purpose: so you can edit them and export them as a video or GIF. Kiroku doesn't analyze what's on your screen, and it doesn't use your recordings for advertising, analytics, or training.
Screen recordings are never sent to us, and we never share them with anyone. Kiroku has no servers and makes no network connections. A recording leaves your Mac only if you export it and share the file yourself.
Kiroku keeps a recording until you delete it. Moving a project to the Trash removes its video and audio. Because we never receive your recordings, we don't keep any.
What stays on your Mac
Kiroku saves its work in these places. Nothing here is sent anywhere, and you can delete any of it at any time.
| What | Where | What's in it |
|---|---|---|
| Recordings | ~/Movies/Kiroku | One .kiroku package per recording: screen and webcam video, audio, your edits, and the input log described below. |
| App Store screenshot sets | ~/Pictures/Kiroku Screenshots | One .kirokushots package per set: copies of the screenshots you add, and your layout and headlines. |
| Settings | Kiroku's app container | Your preferences, such as your workspace style and the last export format you used. |
| Error log | Kiroku's app container, in Library/Logs/Kiroku | Short error messages, capped at 1 MB. It's never sent automatically. You can open it from Settings → About → Error Logs. |
When you move a project to the Trash from Kiroku, its video, audio, edits, and input log go with it.
Cursor and clicks
Kiroku leaves your real cursor out of the capture and redraws it afterward. To do that, it saves an input log in each project, in a file named events.json. The log holds:
- where your cursor moved and when you clicked,
- and which app was in front, so Smart Focus can follow what you were doing.
Kiroku doesn't record the keys you press.
Test versions of Kiroku before 1.0 (22) had a Shortcut Overlay. Projects recorded with it on may hold the shortcuts pressed during those recordings, and projects from build 15 or earlier may also hold the letters typed. Moving such a project to the Trash removes them.
Kiroku records input only while a recording is running. The log stays inside the project on your Mac.
Permissions
macOS asks you for each permission separately, only when you first use the feature that needs it. You can turn any of them off in System Settings → Privacy & Security.
| Permission | What Kiroku uses it for |
|---|---|
| Screen & System Audio Recording | Capturing your screen, a window, or a region, and the sound your Mac plays. |
| Microphone | Recording your narration, when Microphone is on. |
| Camera | Recording your Webcam, and recording a connected iPhone or iPad with Device. |
Apple and TestFlight
Apple handles downloading, buying, and updating Kiroku. Apple's Privacy Policy covers that.
If you've turned on Share with app developers in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements, Apple shares crash reports and app usage statistics with us. Apple doesn't include your name or contact details. We use these reports only to find and fix problems.
If you test a beta of Kiroku through TestFlight, Apple shares the crash reports and feedback you send from TestFlight with us, including any screenshots you attach, along with basic tester details such as the name and email address you were invited with. We use these only to improve Kiroku.
When you contact us
If you email us, we receive your email address, your message, and anything you attach, such as a copy of Kiroku's error log. We use it only to reply and to fix the problem you reported. We don't add you to a mailing list unless you ask for launch news, and we never sell or share your email.
We keep support emails while we're helping you and for a reasonable time after, in case you follow up. Ask us and we'll delete them sooner.
This website
This website doesn't use cookies, analytics, or advertising, and it doesn't load fonts, scripts, or images from other companies. The server that hosts it may keep standard access logs, such as IP address, time, and page requested, to keep the site secure and working.
Your rights
Because Kiroku doesn't collect your data, the only personal information we might hold is email you've sent us. You can ask us for a copy of it, or ask us to correct or delete it, at privacy@shojum.com. We'll honor these requests wherever you live, including under the GDPR, the UK GDPR, and California law.
We don't sell or share personal information. Kiroku doesn't collect personal information from anyone, including children.
Changes and contact
If we change this policy, we'll update this page and its effective date. If a change affects what Kiroku stores or sends, we'll also say so in the app's What's New before the update ships.
